Pastor Mambud Samai

Missionary Organization: Greatest Goal Ministries
Location: Sierra Leone

Ministry Description: The Greatest Goal Ministry is an off-shoot of the Single Leg Amputee Soccer Club, which is directed by Mambud. The goal of these two ministries is to plant churches, establish schools, health centers and mobile clinics to reach out to the amputees from the civil war in the country in the 1990's, as well as other un-reached people. The soccer outreach program includes mostly Christian team-members who compete with similar teams internationally. The ministry also provides support services, micro loans and prosthetic services in collaboration with Prosthetic Outreach Foundation. They also hold annual Vacation Bible School programs.

This is our first group of ladies at the Women of Value retreat. Every lady in the photo has at least one limb amputation except for team members Mary Campos (back row, far right), Nicole Williams & Sue MacFarlane (middle row, left) and Tina Smith (sitting, front row). Ruth is just behind Tina. Constance is sitting in front (white polka dot dress) and her mom, Janet, is standing in the top row with a white top. Hannah Samai is standing below Mary in the gold dress. And our valuable interpreter, Zainab, is sitting in front with tablet in hand.

Women of Value Retreat~Freetown, Sierra Leone

May, 2008

It is my firm belief that the cries and prayers to God from the ladies with amputations in Sierra Leone, brought each of us to show them a glimpse of God’s great love for them. What a job and what a privilege!

One of the verses given to me during this trip was from Daniel 9:23.

“as soon as you began to pray – an answer was given…..for you are highly esteemed.” These precious African ladies called out to God. He heard their cries and stirred the hearts of some of their nearby sisters and some on the other side of the globe – including us, and those who prayed and monetarily supported us.

We provided two retreats of two full days for twenty women each (most previously Muslim). They were catered to with good food, fun crafts, foot washing, pedicures, manicures & lots of love. We shared the love of Jesus with music, singing, dancing, Scripture & sharing. The focus of the retreat was a story told in their language, of two other young women who also survived a similar war and came to see Jesus’ hand of protection through it. The Holy Spirit was evident at all levels as some came to Christ for the first time and others, including us leaders, grew in faith.

At the end of the retreat they took home their hand made crafts, an official certificate, cloth mini purses (made at Canyon Hills), cosmetic and lotion samples, a 30 pound bag of dry goods on their head, the hope of Jesus in their hearts, and the knowledge that they are highly esteemed by the King.

Like the amputee soccer players, we pray that these ladies will be vessels of Christ’s peace & joy and empowered to reach out to others in their communities. We are forever changed for having been a part of it all.

Serving until He returns,

HALF YEARLY SUMMARY REPORT ON THE ACTIVITIES UNDERTAKEN BY GGM-SL FROM JANUARY – JUNE 2008

Preamble: The Greatest Goal Ministries (GGM) is blessed for the Divine connections of overseas partnership; GGM-USA and Canyon Hills community Church – USA. We are grateful to God for these blessings of LOVE, CARE, FEEL and to SHARE with us in the months under review. My report covers the following;

I. Micro Finance for Amputee Women

Micro-enterprise support (including basic business management training, start-up kits, support for co-operatives, personal profiles etc.) are empowerment strategies to restore dignity and self esteem to these disabled and marginalized society we represent as a Charity. In early January – 2008, 11 female amputees received Micro – finance of total $1,200 USD targeting various petty trading in their local communities. The loan is said to be re-paid quarterly and the office is encourage that they are gradually responding to this revolving loan payments. If amputees are to successfully contribute to national social and economic development the provision of these resources and opportunity are essential.

II. Computer Training for Amputees

GGM had recently received accreditation from the Government ministry of Education, Science and Technology to officially carry out Computer training with disable amputees living across the country. Ten (10) amputee students will graduate in the first batch of the program in November 2008. The second batch will enroll in early January 2009. Some problems the class faced are inadequate computers - additional supply of at least 10 more used desk-top computers to be added to the currently six (6) desk-top would be an excellent offer. A desk top used computer (Pentium 3) cost $150 in Freetown. The amputees are very interested in the IT program. The training is very expensive in public commercial institutions, so it is an opportunity for these disable persons to learn computer skills and become self employed, or serve GGM or gain job in other functional institutions like serving the Government etc. The selection for amputees to be trained is based on their academic level, at least a Junior Secondary level (JSS3).

III. Mission Trip in April - 2008 – “Harvest Festival Conference”

GGM Sierra Leone had the opportunity to collaborate with World Harvest from USA in putting on a Conference for Pastors and Church leaders in Sierra Leone through connections with our partner; GGM-USA on April 23rd – 25th 2008. It was a great success! Approximately 160 Pastors (from 60 different churches), church leaders and Christian businessmen were registered for the conference. The Christian teachings of Pastor Danny Hanafi – an Indonesian living in California, USA and Pastor Franky Lumingkewas also an Indonesian based in Seattle – Washington States, USA were so valued and well received that by the 3rd day of the conference the number of attendees had risen to almost 200.

The conference was based on Biblical principles focusing on Christian leadership qualities. It was emphasized that for change to happen in Sierra Leone, it must come from WITHIN Sierra Leone… and this change begins in the CHURCH! GGM will need to be a part of this change of mindset. We were all touched so deeply by the power of the Holy Spirit present at this conference. The Harvest Festival was so well received that everyone wanted it to be an annual conference. It was agreed that a Crusade would accompany the next Harvest Festival in January 2009. This would have the potential to reach over 100,000 Sierra Leoneans!

Lynn Pelton and Anne-Marie Trombold both from Greatest Goal Ministries – USA living in Seattle - Washington provided service delivery in basic physiotherapy and first aid medical care. Pastor Ndjoli Iyanga – a Congolese residing in Kampala – Uganda was the Africa Coordinator for International Full Gospel Fellowship (IFGF) and presented a Bible Institutes planed to be established in Sierra Leone through the IFGF Churches as may be requested. Pastor Julius Nyangbeh – a Liberian represented his country in this International Conference.

IV. Mission Trip in May - 2008: - “Women of Value Retreat”

On May 12th through 25th 2008, GGM-SL received seven (7) Missionaries from USA and the UK; five women and two men; Dee Malchow, Susan McFalane, Mary Campus, Nicole Williams, Christiana Smith, Dr. Doug Smith and Robert Jones.
Two retreats were provided for 40 women with amputations.
Each was 2 full days and included about 18 participants and 9 leaders.
The goal was to show these women, in several ways, the love of Christ, and to process the emotion of their war traumas. They are highly valued by Him, were protected from death during the war, and have the opportunity to spend forever with God in a new whole body because of Jesus.

The Services includes;

  • Story Therapy
  • Pampering and Honoring
  • Music, Prayer and Praise
  • Videos and Snacks
  • Presentation Certificates
  • Amputee profiles
  • Relief Food Supply.

Several interviews with amputee women and overseas guests on the national Radio with various journalists were conducted during the retreat.

Biblical Impact:
About 17 women received JESUS CHRIST during and after the “Women of Value Rtreat” and are eager to learn more of Jesus in GGM follow-up meetings and Bible Hour. Sue McFalane had earlier responded to a donation of $100 USD to purchase Bibles for these young Christians in Sierra Leone. A total number of 70 Bibles had been bought and many distributed. A Baptism of this year’s converts is scheduled in late December 2008.

Countryside Visitation:
The entire team visited the Northern capital of Makeni where they watched girls soccer match run by one of the soccer amputee player’s there; Ibrahim Turay. The team also visited POF hospital in Makeni where Dr. Doug Smith assisted about seven surgical cases in collaboration with the Government District Medical Superintendent; Dr. Adegali Kamara.

Amputee Soccer Match:
Amputee soccer players were also visited by the missionary team during training session at the Aberdeen pitch and received very nice jerseys, clutches and blister gloves from the Jewish girl; Zoë Nicole living in the US. Added to that, a personal counseling with individual players and SLASC leaders was scheduled by Robert Jones which became a great success.

Sunday Worship Services
The team experienced and enjoyed different flavor in worship service according to Africa settings. The newly established Church, also named after “Canyon Hills Community Church” in Seattle has got her branch in Sierra Leone with 50 memberships at present. The team was given the opportunity to preach the word of God and Robert Jones from UK preached on May 18th and Dee Malchow from USA preached on May 25th 2008.

V. Relocation of GGM-SL Office
We are thankful for the support received from Dr. Jim and Lynn Pelton (GGM-USA) for payment of $3,000 on our behalf to secure an office space in Freetown to enhance the smooth operation of our work in the country. The National office has been relocated at number “8 Regent Road, Freetown”. GGM-SL had also moved with SLASC to occupy this building to provide our on-going capacity building to amputee players.

VI. PRAYER REQUESTS
Prayer for Ministry Vehicle
There is great dare need of ministry vehicle for Sierra Leone office. We phased severe difficulty in reaching out to our beneficiaries (amputees) living in the outcast of Freetown and those in the countryside. Evangelism and Church planting are under serious constraints in reaching out to the community. Please pray with us for a ministry vehicle to enhance the smooth running of this ministry.

Prayer for a Mission House
In order to have more missionaries willing to work in Sierra Leone on short or long term missions, the need for a mission facility in the country is essential. GGM-SL had been offered over 4 acres of land each by community leaders in 3 locations in the country; Freetown (Big Whater community - West), Kono (Kukuama community - East) and Sulima (Down River community - South). See map of SL. A project for a RESOURCE CENTRE which shall include services like Vocational Skills training centers, Medical, Recreation for amputees, Accommodation for short and long term missionaries from overseas would be an innovative and highly contributing drive in the rehabilitation process of Sierra Leone.

Construction of Canyon Hills Community Church - Sierra Leone
A total membership of 50 with an individual average monthly income below $40 with family burden between 5 – 9 dependants are hardly struggling to survive let alone they are task to contribute to the construction of a Church for $15,000. Please pray with us for a break through.

Exchange Programs
God is leading the Sierra Leone office to request for short-term missionary from overseas to live with us for missions services in the country. He/she might take a maximum of 3 or 6 months in Sierra Leone. The services to be engage could be vary according to disciplines; Kids ministry, Physiotherapist, Sports/coaching, Evangelists, Youth ministry, Agriculturists, Women ministry, IT specialist, Art & crafts and Researchers. Pray that we could have a volunteer missionary to Sierra Leone.

VII. FINANCIAL REPORT – JAN. – JUN 2008
GGM-SL is very proud of our partners for the generous support to our programs during the first sixth month of ministry operation in Sierra Leone. A sum total of $10,853 came in since January 2009 through GGM-USA. The office however received funds from Canyon Hills Community Church which is not included in this report due to the fact that, the office found it hard to track the specific amount that were sent every month. We do not have regular communication from Canyon Hills Community Church’s Mission Council financial department. Please send us at least one line statement every time funds is been remitted into GGM-SL Bank Account from your desk and include the total funds sent.. The blank spaces however in the expenditure column are areas that were complemented by Canyon Hills Community Church funds and other internal findings.
