This last Sunday, I had someone come up to me for a chat in between services. He had been coming to the church for a while and had a question for me. He said, What exactly is the gospel? After having a good discussion, I starting thinking about how many people have the same question.

What is the Gospel?
The Gospel is the good news that Jesus Christ came, died, and rose again for the forgiveness of our sin. It is defined in scripture as the life, death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 says that “Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.” We believe that Jesus is God, that he lived a perfect life here on earth, was killed by the people he came to save, and through that saved the world. We also believe that after 3 days he rose again, defeating death, conquering the grave and giving us eternal hope.

God has a plan to deal with all the hurt and the pain that sin causes. Through the Gospel, God invites sinners (you and me) to come to Jesus through faith and repentance to find forgiveness, life, and peace in Christ. He punished Jesus for your sins so that you could have life. This is God’s plan for redemption, and it’s perfect. He has given us a way to have relationship with him. That’s good news!

The hope we have in the Gospel is that through faith in Christ we will have eternal life in community with our Savior. This gives us hope regardless of challenges we have in life. We have hope and joy in a good God who saves sinners like you and me by the life, death, and resurrection of his Son.

On a scale of 1-10, how well do you know the Gospel?

Would you feel confident in sharing what the Gospel is with someone you know? Why or why not? What if someone asked you a question about it?

One of the amazing aspects of the Gospel is that God uses redeemed sinners to spread his Gospel to the world. We are called to know the Gospel, and we are called to share the Gospel. 1 Peter 3:15 says that we are to be “prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you.” The Gospel is something we need to have down, because it is the means to save people we love.
